Experiencing Remainders Creative Reuse / Curious LA Field Notes
Quick Take
Remainders gives craft supplies a second life. Each week, the store processes hundreds of pounds of donations from closet cleanouts, estate sales, and film studio costume departments. The result is a warehouse of materials priced so low that teachers stock entire classrooms here and hobbyists can experiment without breaking the bank. Upstairs classes teach practical skills in an open studio environment where beginners can learn to sew or experienced crafters can book time at shared workstations.
A Thrift Store for Makers
Walk into Remainders and you’ll find floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with bolts of fabric, bins of yarn, boxes of beads, and jars of buttons. The ground floor is organized by category—fabrics here, paper goods there, sewing notions in the corner. Most items cost under $5. Fabric runs $5 per yard or by the pound. Buttons sell for $3 per bag. Yarn goes for $5 per pound.
The inventory changes constantly because everything comes from donations. One week might bring vintage 1970s patterns. The next week could yield professional-grade fabric from Warner Brothers costume departments. High school art teachers wheel out carts loaded with supplies that would cost hundreds at retail. Jewelry makers sort through trays of findings and chain.
What You’ll Find
The paper section holds stationery, cardstock, scrapbooking supplies, and vintage greeting cards. The fabric department fills the back half of the store with quilting cotton, upholstery material, leather, and trim. Craft sections include paints, brushes, canvases, beads, and jewelry-making tools. There are also Cricut machines, sewing machines, and other equipment that’s been checked over by staff.
Occasional surprises turn up in donations—like the real Rolex watch that went up on Remainders’ eBay account. Anything with significant value gets auctioned online to support the organization. The regular inventory moves fast at these prices, so repeat visits turn up different materials each time.
Creative Space Upstairs
The second floor holds Gallery 787, which shows work from local artists during rotating exhibitions. There’s also a classroom with sewing machines, maker stations for various projects, and a research library. The nonprofit offers ongoing workshops in beginner sewing, embroidery, printmaking, and other fiber arts. Classes fill up quickly and cost a fraction of what commercial studios charge.
Open studio hours let experienced makers book time to use equipment and workspace. Community meet-ups bring together knitters, crocheters, and other crafters to work on projects together.
Planning Your Visit
The store gets crowded on weekends when regulars come to hunt for new donations. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter for browsing. Bring reusable bags—you’ll want them. The aisles can be tight when the store is busy, but the treasure-hunt atmosphere is part of the experience.
Parking is behind the building off the back alley. The lot serves both floors, including the donation drop-off area. Teachers should bring ID for the 15% discount.
Remainders proves that one person’s leftover craft supplies can become another person’s next project. The store keeps usable materials out of landfills while making creative pursuits accessible to people who might otherwise skip them due to cost.
